According to Whyte’s Directory, in 1847 there were 27 grocers and tea dealers in Berwick and 4 in Tweedmouth. Berwick also had 3 gardeners and fruiterers.

The same Directory lists 21 bakers and flour dealers in Berwick, 2 in Spittal and 6 in Tweedmouth. There were also 8 confectioners in Berwick.

Berwick has its own speciality, the “Berwick Cockle”, a red and white striped, peppermint-flavoured boiled sweet that has been made in the town since 1801.
