Butchers, Fishmongers and Game Dealers

According to Whyte’s Directory, in 1847 there were 24 butchers in Berwick, 3 in Spittal and 5 in Tweedmouth. Berwick also had 5 fishmongers and merchants .

Today, Berwick still has three traditional family butchers’ shops, while many much larger towns in the UK have none.

Although there are no fishmongers in the town centre today, fresh and smoked fish and shell-fish are available from a van that attends the twice-weekly market in Marygate.

Crabs, lobsters and shell-fish can also be purchased online or direct from the Berwick Shellfish Company premises on Dock Road, Tweedmouth.
